Fighting to Protect MICRA:
The Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA) is intended to ensure that injured patients receive fair compensation while preserving patients’ access to health care by keeping physicians, nurses, and health care providers in practice and hospitals and clinics open.
Under MICRA, injured patients my receive:
- UNLIMITED economic damages for any and all past and future medical costs.
- UNLIMITED economic damages for lost wages and lifetime earning potential.
- UNLIMITED punitive damages – punishment awarded for malicious or willful misconduct.
- $250,000 cap on awards for non-economic damages, often called ‘pain and suffering’.
